Directions to Exempt
Under Part 3 of Schedule 4 to the Legal Services Act, the LSB has the power to exempt certain general or specific changes to the Regulatory Arrangements from the approval process by issuing a direction.
All directions will be issued directly to the Approved Regulator concerned. Copies will also be published here.

| 21 December 2011 | Exemption Direction 33 Alterations to Regulatory Arrangements relating to the Practising Certificate Rules and changing references to ‘recognised bodies’ to authorised bodies’ | LSB directs the exemption from the requirement for LSB approval of changes: to the Practising Certificate Rules, Rule 5 to clarify that an application for a practising certificate will only be fully made if the relevant documents and the relevant practising certificate fee has been received by the Bar Standards Board; and changing references to ‘recognised bodies’ to ‘authorised bodies’. This is to maintain the current arrangements in light of the introduction of the “authorisation to practise” regime under section 13(2) and Schedule 5 of the Legal Services Act 2007. | 31 December 2009 | Exemption Direction 3 Alterations relating to CIPA and ITMA arrangements – transitional (Paragraph 19(3) and (4) of Schedule 4 direction). | LSB directs the exemption from the requirement for LSB approval regulations made by ITMA in relation to section 83A Trade Marks Act 1994 and by CIPA in accordance with Section 275A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1998 and submitted prior to 1 January. This is to facilitate the transition from ownership of the relevant registers from the Intellectual Property Office to ITMA and CIPA on 1st January 2010. This direction is to be deemed made on and to be effective from 1 January 2010. |
| 30 December 2009 | Exemption Direction 2 Alterations relating to compliance with the Internal Governance Rules (Paragraph 19(3) and (4) of Schedule 4 direction). | LSB directs the exemption from the requirement for LSB approval for alterations to Approved Regulators’ Regulatory Arrangements that are made in order to achieve compliance with the Internal Governance Rules, that have been subject to non-compliance notification requirements and that have been agreed by the LSB as part of on-going Section 30 implementation arrangements.
